Adrienne has been chatting on her "phone" for over a year now, but the content has certainly evolved into more and more entertaining material. Recently she got out her "purse" and put on some "lipstick" and got out her phone. A couple of days earlier, Eric had used the scissors to pop a balloon that Adrienne got from Red Robin. It was starting to droop , playmates were fighting over it, and Eric wanted to get rid of it before anyone ended up ingesting latex. She proceeds to (pretend) call her friend Jennifer (one of her playmates) and tell her (after the usual pleasantries were exchanged) "Daddy cut my balloon wit da sizzors, make me so so sad.... yeah... he pop it, make me so so sad..."
What makes this especially notable is not only the fact that she recalled the incident 2 days later and chose to retell it to her best little girlfriend in an imaginary phone call, but that she seems to be inclined to hang onto the moments in life where her daddy lets her down. The first instance that really left a lasting impression happened when she was about 18 months old... Eric accidentally pinched her skin when trying to zip up her pajamas. For a solid 3 months, anytime someone was putting on pajamas or in any other potential pinching situation, Adrienne reminded the world that "Daddy pinch me in my ladybug pajamas" (accompanied by a very sad expression). After a while I wanted to start singing "stuck in a moment" to her!
Adrienne adores Eric, and the feeling is mutual, but, from pajama pinching to balloon popping, there is something in that little girl that already wants to know that her daddy will always be there for her, to meet her needs and is sort of probing to see what his response will be to her hurt. Thankfully , Eric is a wonderful father... but, even so, he will never be able to meet her every expectation. We can only pray that she will one day know her heavenly Father who will love her perfectly. As we all know that will not solve all of her earthly problems, but will certainly make the journey much more enjoyable.
